What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the study of hormones, glands that produce them and tissues that are affected by them. Endocrine system is the second major controlling system of the body. It helps coordinate and integrate the activity of the body's cells together with the nervous system. It also employs chemical messenger or hormones that transmit information which are released into the blood to be transported throughout the body.
The functions of endocrine system include the process of growth and development that promotes the physical changes of the body; the production of chemical secretions that help control the body’s metabolic activity. It also maintains the constancy of the environment within the body (homeostasis). Hormones also control the storage and utilization of energy by the body.
Hormones play a big role in one’s life. In the development of both male and female sex characteristics under the sex hormones. In the posterior pituitary gland, there are the posterior pituitary hormones which are called oxytocin and antidiuretic oxytocin causes uterine contraction during pregnancy and causes milk ejection for the food of the baby. While the antidiuretic oxytocin helps us conserve body water by reabsorbing more water from the forming of the urine therefore less urine is being urinated by one person.
A key aspect of endocrine function is the feedback control of the hormone production and secretion. For all hormones systems are identified by the feedback loops. Mostly the loops are negative but there are instances of positive feedback, with the end product of system stimulates output.
